This must be THE most popular question we get asked. In short … every tattoo removal is different because every person and their tattoo are unique.
Not only is every tattoo different, but everyone’s body is different too. So, with these two factors combined, there is no single “one answer fits all” answer unfortunately.
I know this might be an incredibly frustrating answer and I wish we had a magic crystal ball so we could tell you exactly how many sessions it will take to remove your tattoo… but we can’t. However, rest assured we will do our best to remove your tattoo in as little sessions as possible while keeping your skin in tip top condition.
What I can tell you is that research has shown that for a tattoo that is around ten years old, black in colour and treated with a medical grade gold standard laser, the global average is around 6-8 sessions to fully remove. What this means is that most of you will fall in to this category of having your tattoo completely removed in around 6-8 sessions. Occasionally some tattoos are removed in as little as 2 and sometimes some tattoos may take 10 or more sessions. Generally, after your first tattoo removal session we will be able to see how much ink was knocked out and this will give us a more educated guess on where you will sit regarding the number of tattoo removal sessions you will require. Obviously if you have a really big fade back in the first session, you will be on the lower end of the number of sessions and similarly if your tattoo didn’t fade a lot, you will be towards the upper end of the number of sessions.
There are quite a lot of factors that will influence how many tattoo removal treatments you may need to fully remove your tattoo, and most of them are out of our control. I will go through some of these below.
One of the major factors affecting laser tattoo removal is your health. When we perform laser tattoo removal on a tattoo, the dark pigment of the ink particles absorbs the laser energy and smashes these large tattoo ink particles in to smaller ink particles. These smaller particles are now small enough to be engulfed by your white blood cells and eliminated from your body through your lymphatic system. So, if you are unfit or have a sluggish lymphatic system, this will affect your body’s ability to remove the smashed ink particles. We can smash the ink but if your body is not “healthy” enough to remove it, it will remain exactly where it is under your skin deep in the dermal layer.
Similarly, where the tattoo is situated on your body will affect how many laser tattoo removal sessions you may need. As discussed above, the smashed ink is removed from your body through your lymphatic system, so tattoos that are close to your lymph nodes and your heart where you have good blood circulation will move quicker than those in your extremities (ie. hands and feet) where your circulation is a lot poorer. So, if you are young fit and healthy, and exercise regularly you will have a better response to laser tattoo removal than someone who is older, overweight and sedentary. The worst are smokers because smoking affects your circulation greatly.
Obviously, the tattoo itself plays a major factor in determining the amount of removal sessions. Whether the tattoo was applied “at home” or professionally in a tattoo parlour, how deep the tattoo was applied down in to the dermal layer, the type of ink used (bali and thai ink are notoriously harder to treat), tattoo layering (coverups and touched up tattoos are harder), colours (black is easiest, vibrant colours and especially multicoloured are hardest) and the amount of ink applied (was your tattoo artist heavy handed). It is also very common to have obtained some pre-existing scarring from the tattoo gun. This scarring can cause ink to be trapped in amongst the scar tissue making it harder to remove the ink.
Another determining factor is the age of your tattoo. Older tattoos will generally need less treatments and fade quicker than a new tattoo. With a “fresh” tattoo, there is still 100% of the tattoo ink particles sitting in the dermal layer. With a tattoo that is 20 years old it has already started to fade and become blurry. Your body’s immune system has spent 20 years trying to engulf these foreign tattoo ink particles and remove them from your body and has succeeded with a very small amount of the ink. Our amazing laser quickens this process by smashing the ink in to smaller particles or bite size pieces for your immune system.
Technology also plays a very important role in the rate of Tattoo Removal. At NuBare Laser Tattoo Removal Clinic we use the Quanta Q Plus C EVO. The most powerful multi-wavelength laser system on the market worldwide. — no other system can match its high peak power across all three wavelengths. We are able to treat any colour of ink safely and effectively. Cheap is not the best option. I almost daily see people going to cheap removal places, with cheap lasers, who have had 6 or more removals and their tattoos have stopped moving. This is because these cheap lasers in the end do not have the capability of removing ink entirely and in the end, they just end up scarring. You end up having to have more sessions and it will cost you more in the long run. So, please don’t go with the cheap option as you will regret it.
How well you look after your tattoo post laser will affect your removal too. The closer you adhere to your post care instructions the better your removal experience will be.
And lastly, but certainly not the least, the experience and skill of your laser technician. What training has your technician undergone? What is their background? Was there last job a truck driver or a scientist? At NuBare we are pleased to announce that our laser technician is highly qualified when it comes to the laser and has a Bachelor of Science so rest assured you are in good hands.
